Village Hall Events

Friday 9th Julyfrom 7.00 p.m.

Thank Goodness It’s The WeekEnd (TGITWE)

We are responding to requests from people in the village to hold a casual evening with a simple meal, a few drinks and a chat with friends on a Friday evening and the first of these will be on the above date. On this occasion, we will be providing a lasagne, salad & garlic bread meal (together with a dessert on this inaugural event) for a cost of just £7.50 per person.

Tickets (which must be bought in advance) are available from Tricia Harbour (680676).

Sunday 18th Julyat 12.30 p.m.

Boules Competition

Once again we are pleased to announce that we are holding our ever-popular Boules Competition accompanied by French cheeses, patés, wine and beer on Sunday, 18th July starting at 12.30 p.m. As usual, we will be taking precautions to ensure that the event goes ahead despite the vagaries of the English weather. The cost will be £6 per person and children (up to the age of 12) are free and this cost will cover food and entry to the competition. Angela Emmerson (680565) can provide tickets.

Sunday 8th Augustfrom 10.00 a.m.

Village Hall Working Party Day

On Sunday, 8 August, the Village Hall Committee are going to carry out some much-needed maintenance on the Hall and are looking for volunteers to assist in the task. Amongst other tasks we want to clear out the entrance hall annexe, clear out the gutters, re-organise the store room and clear out the kitchen cupboards.

We know that this sounds a bit like hard work but we think that it is necessary to preserve this facility for the Village and if any more encouragement is needed then there will be a free BBQ and drinks for those who come along and help.

Vicarage Notes

Thought for the month

I needed new specs last month, and as I explained to the optician it would be good to have a reading lens for close work, clergy desk and altar. “Can’t be done, you’ll need to choose your focus” she advised. That sounded the ideal text for the next Sunday – choose your focus! We are all sidetracked by the busyness of the world and the Christianity is under mounting pressure. As pilgrims, we need a clear focus and steadfast faith!

St. Lawrence

Dear Lawrence doesn’t get much of a look-in in the village agenda partly because his feast day is in the holiday month of August (10th). However, we will be marking the occasion with a Patronal Festival Songs of Praise on August 8th at 6.30 p.m. All are warmly invited, and ideas for making the service extra special (including hymn requests) will be warmly received.

Special Thanks

Congratulations to Lilian Welsby, the social and fund-raising committee and all the team who worked so hard to make the Scarecrow Weekend a huge success. A great deal of hard work goes into what is maybe the largest regular village event in the area, and Lilian shoulders the organiser’s responsibilities. Well done, everyone, and many thanks for all the co-operation that comes from the whole village!!

God bless,

Rural Dean's Garden Party

Everyone in the Deanery is warmly invited to a Garden Party at our home, The Old House, Oxhill, CV35 0QN, on Sunday, August 22nd, between 3.00 and 5.00 p.m.

We hope that the sun will shine, but should it rain, we know from last year that 80 or more people will fit into the house!

As before, cakes would be very welcome!

Jill Tucker

At the Peacock

The charity quiz will be held on Sunday 4th starting promptly at 8 p.m. The village coffee morning will be on Wednesday 7th starting at 10.30 and the village lunch of Wednesday 21st starting at 12.30.

Tysoe Tennis Club

Tysoe Tennis Club held a junior tournament and family BBQ on Sunday 13th June in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care. Funds raised on the day will go to the charity, which is best known for its network of nurses who work in the community to provide free end-of-life care for patients in their own homes.

Ten local youngsters between the ages of five and 16 took part in the tournament which saw members of the same family pitted against each other. They all received Marie Curie Cancer Care sweatbands and prizes were awarded to players in two age groups. The winners were Edward Hill (8) in the Under-9s group and Harry Camp (13) in the Under-16s.

It was great to see how much the children enjoyed taking part and at the same time know we were raising funds for a good cause. Some of the young ones showed great promise, given that they were up against much older players.

Master Gardener

Free local advice and support growing food

Gardening charity, Garden Organic, and Warwickshire County Council are running a brand new project to train people in the art of growing their own food, funded by the Big Lottery Fund’s Local Food scheme.

The Master Gardener programme - a volunteer network supporting local people and communities to grow fruit and vegetables in their gardens and on communal land – is underway with over 40 Master Gardeners already trained in Warwickshire.

Master Gardeners encourage and advise people who would like to “grow their own” in whatever space they have, from a pot on a windowsill to a new allotment, and anything in between. Drawing on their own experiences and a wealth of resources Master Gardeners offer advice on what to grow and where, as well as sowing, planting and growing techniques. You can sign up to receive 12 months of support from your local Master Gardener, and it’s free!

If you live in Tysoe, Oxhill, Whatcote, Brailes, Kineton or surrounding villages and would like to call upon a Master Gardener for advice and support then contact your local Master Gardeners, Mike and Sue Sanderson at: sueandmikemastergardeners@hotmail.co.uk

Visit the website www.mastergardeners.org.uk for more information.

Information from Shipston Police

Under-age Drinking

Under-age drinking is a hot topic of discussion and Warwickshire Police takes a zero tolerance approach. We are working in partnership with licensed premises to stamp out this issue and we run a number of schemes and operations. Shipston Safer Neighbourhood Team are carrying out regular patrols of areas where youths are known to congregate and are seizing alcohol from those present. Police Community Support Officers can seize alcohol from anyone who is under age and will also seize alcohol from anyone who intends to supply to anyone under-age.

Distraction Burglaries

The majority of people who knock on your door are genuine callers but sometimes may be bogus callers who intend to break into homes and steal money or valuables.

Bogus callers may be smartly dressed or wear a uniform such as a those of a council worker, police, health organisation, builders or gas, water or electricity company. Some may ask for a drink of water or be looking for a lost pet. In fact, they may use any story to distract people. They may use ‘props’ such as an ID card or wear the company uniform with a logo on it.

Here are a few ways to safe guard your self against distraction burglaries:

1. Keep the front and back door locked even when at home.

2. Before answering the door, stop and think if you are expecting someone.

3. If you do decide to answer the door, put the chain or bar on. Keep the bar or chain on while you are talking to the person on the doorstep.

4. If you are expecting a caller, always check their identification very carefully against the letter you have been sent or ask for a password, which has been agreed, before you let them in. Do they look like the person on the card?

5. If you are not expecting anyone and you are alone, ask them to call back when you have someone with you.
