Bread Group

Just to let you all know Bread group is now up and running for the summer. We meet on Tuesday nights once a month at 7.00 pm at the Old Chapel. We made some lovely cinammon bread this month. It was a great success and absolutely delicious.

Here are the dates for the next 5 months - 23rd June, 21st July, 11th August, 22nd September and 20th October. Hopefully avoiding most holiday periods.

Joy Clarke will email you shortly before each meeting to give you instructions on what ingredients to bring or whether to follow a recipe to first prove. This cuts down the amount of time we have to wait for each proving.

We have had some problems with emails. Please can you respond to Joy, jclarke@joyclarke.com and let her know whether you are coming or not. This will help in calculating the amount of ingredients etc required as well as Joy knowing if you have actually received her email or not. If there is anyone in the village who would like to join us do come along on any of the dates.

News Courier Needed

We are very grateful for the years that Posy and Graham MacDonald have delivered the News to the residents along the Whatcote Road, but as all good things, their service has now come to an end.

So we need another volunteer to take over their courier route. Near the end of every month we will deliver about 30 copies of the News to your door, for you to deliver to the houses along the Whatcote Road.

Is there anyone who can help? If so, please contact Roger or Vanessa by email or telephone. Thank you!!

Reports of a Drone over the Village

Recently several residents have voiced concern over the flying of a drone (or quad copter) over their gardens, especially with a view to recent burglaries and of course privacy. Whilst I am sure this was just a bit of harmless fun, we all have to be aware that we need to respect other people’s properties and opinions, and we need to be courteous to our neighbours.

These aircraft need to be kept within sight, deemed to be 500 metres in a straight line of the operator, and they should not be flown within 30 metres of a person and 50 metres of a building without a CAA licence.

If you own one of these, there are clubs and societies that obtain legal access or rent areas of land for the purpose of flying these and other aircraft. We know we all have to be vigilant in regard to suspicious vehicles and/or people; perhaps we should add these to the list and just be aware.

Mick & Barbara Shepard - change of home contact details

Our home telephone number 01295680644 will no longer work.

In future please contact us by using our mobiles:

Mick 07976298228
Barbara 07976269090

The reason for this is because we are now using SugarNet Broadband which is now working very well and so we no longer need a home telephone line from BT.

We are now able to make calls using our smart phones and the new broadband system.

If anyone wants more details of this please give us a call and we will be happy to explain how this works and the costs that are involved.

Oil Consortium

The next oil order is due on the 2ndJune. Please include your name and address when placing the order and if you have not yet given us your mobile number please include that as well.

Boules Day reminder – Sunday 19 July

July’s event is our ever popular and annual Boules Tournament for which we particularly welcome families to come along and take part. Played for the Gardner’s Cup, the event will be rounded off with authentic French pates, cheeses, breads, salads, dessert and beverages. We take precautions to ensure it can take place whatever the weather and you don't have to come in teams; we can do that for you!

The event kicks off at 12.30 pm and tickets, which can be obtained from Tricia Harbour on 680676, are £8 per person with children (up to age of 12) free. The cost covers the food and entry to the competition.

Cricket returns

And you thought the Ashes was the big cricketing event of the summer…

Well, not quite, as August sees the return of Oxhill v Tysoe. This time Oxhill will be playing host to our `southern hemisphere` rivals and we will be looking for revenge after last summer’s `narrow` defeat.

The date for your diary is Saturday 29 August at Tysoe cricket ground. It was a fabulous event last year, brilliantly hosted by the community of Tysoe, and played in a great spirit. We look forward to your support in August.

Vicarage Notes

What a treat it is to walk the footpaths that radiate out from the villages and, on sunny days, to stop and simply gaze…the landscapes formed by generations of cultivation, the village buildings of mixed ages and styles and the ancient towers of our churches rising as beacons of faith.

It’s the time of the year when I begin to meet walkers and holiday makers visiting the churches. They’re always so impressed by the care given to church and churchyard, by the very fact that they’re open and alive and well. “Services every Sunday” said a visitor the other week “we’re lucky to have one a month!”

It’s always lovely to welcome back old friends, and I’m pleased to baptize the little ones of those married here over the years. I believe that it’s essential to have an open door that welcomes all.

We’re privileged in the “where and when” of our lives – may we be always appreciative of this simple fact and find in the Christian path the way, the truth and the life.

Best Wishes & God bless,

Nicholas Morgan

WOT2Grow - Community Orchard

What a roller coaster of weather – sure you have had similar problems in your gardens to those we have had at the orchard!!

Those frosts were strong and caused a lot of problems but despite this the trees have blossomed and with a good population of bumble bees we hope the pollination has been sufficient to give us some lovely fruit later this year. Then we had the high winds so all in all a difficult couple of months.

Despite our best hopes our bee colonies died over the winter having lost their queens. It was very sad but we have two new swarms of bees installed at the orchard and as there is plenty of food around in the orchard and the fields we have our fingers crossed.

Everyone has worked hard at weeding the soft fruit and feeding them. It has been so much easier this year but we have lots to do to ensure we have lovely fruit this summer. As it is a community orchard we concentrate on producing for the members as well as local residents but we need people to help out with the general maintenance. The mowers have a task to control the dandelions and are doing well!!!

There are lots of tasks to be done like preparing organic sprays, pruning, feeding the trees and plants and watering if we get a dry summer as the soil is wonderful but free draining, and mowing (great exercise)! Do volunteer a little bit of your time to help out and get some fantastic fruit – just contact one of the numbers below!

The orchard is looking good and the bees are buzzing – do come along and see for yourself as the orchard is open 24x7!
