Parish Planning Project

The Steering Group behind the project had two meetings during March and at the time of going to press was due to meet again on 15th April to progress a number of initiatives.

These include carrying out a village survey involving all households (to gather views on Oxhill, its facilities, local services, what people like about Oxhill, areas for improvement etc), a timetable to produce the parish plan document which will aim to guide `local decision makers` on the future development of the parish, and a village design statement which will describe the physical look of the parish and especially its housing and building designs.

At the second of our March meetings we heard from the parish clerk for Brailes about the production of its own parish plan and village survey. We intend to adopt some of the good practices from Brailes.

Meanwhile, Oxhill Parish Council has formally recognised the steering group, and we continue our contacts with the district council to whom we have reinforced our view that the parish does not meet the criteria required to be considered as a Local Service Village. As you will know, this was highlighted in the February edition of Oxhill News and led to the public meeting.

The group is particularly keen to hear from our young people, as part of the survey and the creation of the plan, and is discussing how best to involve younger residents.

As we said last time, this is very much about YOUR village. The views of everyone living in the parish are very important to us and we therefore need to hear from you throughout the course of the project.

The members of the steering group are:

Sue Hunt (Steering Group Co-ordinator), Ann Hale, Mike Collins, Carol Taylor (Parish Council representative), Peter Rivers-Fletcher, GeoffStewart, Tony Wyatt, Alan Hedley, Stuart Whittaker, Adrian Marklew, Peter Britton, Ed Bracher and Paul Sayer.

Please feel free to contact the group if you have any views on the project via email at parish.planning@oxhill.org.uk or to Sue Hunt, Eudon, Whatcote Road.

Vicarage Notes

Annual Meeting

My thanks to all who have supported St. Lawrence’s over the past year! At the AGM Carol Fox and Charles MacCall were re-elected churchwardens. Members of the PCC were also re-elected although Diane Harper retired as electoral roll officer. We thank her for doing this job for many years, and welcomed Doug Nethercleft as the new ERO. Special mention was made of the fine new frontals worked by Sue Hunt – these have been made in memory of Mrs Eve Whaley. We look forward to the coming year of working and worshipping together!

Restoration Project

Still quiet at the preliminary stage, with the Bat survey and conservators report put in hand and awaited. The architect will shortly be undertaking a more detailed inspection of the roof as he prepares the specification – hopefully in good weather next month. In the meantime we look forward to the planned fund raisers.

Best wishes and God bless,

Nicholas Morgan

Deanery News

May sees Ascension Day, which we traditionally celebrate at one of our churches with the Eucharist for Ascension Day, beginning outside when weather permits. This year we are going to Tidmington, just south of Shipston (at least it will be daylight when you try to find it!), and we are delighted that Anthony Wells will be the speaker. The date: Thursday, May 9th, 7.30pm at Tidmington Church.

The evening before, Wednesday May 8th at 7.30pm, Carol Clarke, who in the Diocesan Safeguarding Officer, will be leading a 2 hour session about Safeguarding at St. Edmund’s. This is for any in our churches who work with children or vulnerable adults, and anyone from across the Deanery would be most welcome. If you wish to come, it would be helpful if you could either email or ring me.

Looking ahead, our next Deanery Synod will be on Tuesday, June 11th at 7.30 pm in Alderminster. Alyson Spence, who works for the Alzheimer Society, is going to speak about caring for those with dementia, and we hope too that Kay Dyer will be with us to talk about the discussions taking place at General Synod.

May also, of course, sees Pentecost, on May 19th, when we pray that God’s unpredictable, unseen Spirit will come to us:

O Holy Spirit, Breath of God, blow in our lives this day:
clear out the cobwebs of closed minds and outworn ideas:
fill us with the freshness of your living love.
Cleanse and renew us that we might be
ready to be your people in the world.

From Beginning Prayers, by John Slow

Every blessing,

Scarecrow Event - Road Closure

Would all villagers kindly note that permission has been granted by Stratford on Avon District Council for the closure of roads in and around the village of Oxhill on Saturday the 16th June and Sunday the 17th June 2013 between 10 a.m. and midnight on Saturday and 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Sunday.

Details of closure

Main Street & Church Lane, Oxhill, for their full length. Main Street from the junction with Kineton Road and Whatcote Road at one end of the village until it becomes Church Lane and continuing to its junction with Green Lane and Tysoe Road adjacent to the Church at the other end of the village. It is expected that a large number ofpedestrians will be in the village and from previous experience it is desirable to ensure the safety of all visitors by diverting through traffic away from the centre of the village.

Diversionary Route

The alternative route during the period of closure will be via Green Lane and the Whatcote Road and represents only a minor detour.

Access will be maintained to all properties at all times.

A one way system will operate during the period of closure along Main Street in the direction of Church and residents are politely requested to observe this measure to maintain safety of all pedestrians.

Should any residents have any concerns about the road closure they are asked to contact Carol Fox on 680223.

OWLS Wildflower Competition

At the excellent talk by Karl Curtis on wildlife gardening, OWLS gave away a total of 30 packets of mixed annual and perennial wildflower seeds for clay soil. All of you who have planted a wildflower patch this year, please photograph it when you consider it is at its best, then email your favourite photograph toedbracher @gmail.comby 20th September. We will judge who has grown the best wildflower patch and the winner will get a £25.00 garden voucher from Red Horse.

Grenville Moore

A birdy footnote: it appears that a pair of ravens may be attempting to nest in the large trees near the church. If you are passing look out for some impressive aerobatics, especially “windmilling” when they clasp feet, open their wings, and windmill in a downward spiral.

Kineton Oil Consortium

The consortium will be ordering oil again. Please let me have your needs by 6pm on Tuesday May 28th.

Wrapping up the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations

It was never intended that the event should make a profit but with generous support of a number of individuals and local businesses a significant surplus resulted. From the outset the organising group decided that any remaining funds would be distributed within the village. A donation of £400 was made to our First Responders last year and now the accounts have been finalised the remaining balance of approximately £360 has been split equally between St Lawrence Church and the Village Hall to enable the bank account to be closed.

Thank you once again to all those who contributed in any way to such a successful celebration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

WOT2Grow Your Community Orchard

We are all waiting to get into the garden and get stuck into all those jobs that need doing! Things are just the same at the orchard as there is quite a bit to do to manage the 2 acres and the weather has really not been helpful. A few better days have encouraged some members to come along and start the tasks but we are a bit behind in hitting those weeds and importantly the grass that has encroached on to the rows of bushes and canes. But progress is being made and we have started the feeding before the warmer and wetter weather hits us! Mulching will follow as we top up our supplies with more “green waste” produced from the Council recycling scheme.

The trees are looking good and everything is just about to burst into life so the next few weeks will see a transformation. The canes and bushes already have small green leaves which shows how well they have survived the very cold, long winter.

We have also levelled the footpath running along the west side of the orchard so the access through the pedestrian gate is now easier for push chairs, pedestrians and mowers!!

Why not come and see what we have done – the changes are significant – and think about seeing how you can contribute to your Community Orchard. Every little helps!

From Wednesday 15th May we will have an evening session from 7:00pm alternating with the 10:00am session. Also from Sunday 29th May we will have an afternoon session starting at 2:00pm alternating with the 10:00am session.

See us atwww.wot2grow.co.uk

If you would like more details please contact one of the following who are co-ordinating the community involvement

Bluebell Walk - Whatcote

Owing to the unseasonably cold weather we have been having during March and into April this year, we have changed the date of the walk to Bank Holiday Monday, May 27th. The weather is picking up now but it will need several weeks of more seasonal weather for the bluebells to catch up and, hopefully, be at their best.

The details are as in the April issue of the local magazines and posters will be put up, nearer the time around the area.

Garden Club

Adrian James took us on a virtual tour with his wonderful slideshow of gardens which for the most part, are either far away or less well known.

Our tour started in Spain at the Alhambra palace with it’s peaceful courtyard gardens ideal for quiet reflection, then on to Westonbirt Arboretum for splendid Autumn colour among the Acers and Maples some of which were lit, seeming to turn them into dazzling fireworks. Next to the Exotic Garden in Norwich city centre where we saw pictures of plants with strange shapes and textures. Longstock Water Garden provided pictures of wonderful reflections. This garden was formed following excavations which filled up with water from the River test and resulted in many pools and lakes. It is especially attractive at water lily time.

Then to a contrasting garden at Bosvigo near Truro, Cornwall, a garden of many “rooms” similar to Hidcote.

Finally we had pictures of “oddities” including sculptures by Barbara Hepworth and the giant at Heligan.

Adrian has created a new garden at his home in Offenham which will be open under the NGS scheme first w/e in August.
