WOT2Grow - Community Orchard

All the trees at the orchard are doing well, apart from a couple of damsons, and the fruit is growing fantastically! More thinning has been done as well as a summer prune to shorten the heavily laden branches. We had a good crop of black currants, tay and logan berries but the gooseberries were not so productive having taken a year off after the prolific harvest of last year!

Members have received fruit and also we have donated to the Tysoe Lunch Club, who were most appreciative. The care homes have had some fruit too to fulfil our mission with regard to elderly and infirm people.

We managed to water all the trees during a dry spell as well as the raspberries. The water butts really are a boon as are the two we fill with comfrey and nettles to provide feed for the fruit.

The first of the apples are nearly ready to pick as well as a few plums. We will have some Warwickshire Droopers to pick if they are left to ripen on the trees and not removed too early. The Grenadier cooking apples are beginning to fall and they produce the fluffiest apples!

We do hope we get to pick our harvest before they are removed by the badgers, birds and two legged friends!!

The sensory garden has been a picture even if the path disappeared under the growth of the herbs! A very worthwhile project with Kineton Scout Group as it matures and grows.

So things are going well at the orchard but there is always lots to do and lots to learn about! Why not join us and benefit from the harvest

Deanery News

Dear Everyone,

I hope you have all had a wonderfully restful and restoring summer, enjoying the sunshine wherever possible. As we come into Autumn, suddenly everything happens again.

On Tuesday, October 11th, Bishop David will be leading a Quiet Day at The Old Chapel in Oxhill, from 10.00 am until 4.00 pm. This is for anyone in the Deanery, whether clergy or laity – Readers, worship leaders, ministry team members and so on. You are welcome to come for all or part of the day. His theme will be:
Asa –9th Century BC King: All you didn’t know you needed to know about Asa! The day will look at the topic of perseverance by using the material in 2 Chronicles chapters 14, 15 &16.

There is no charge for the day, but if you are staying all day you are asked to bring a packed lunch, and there will be a donations bowl for the costs of the Chapel and coffee etc.

That same evening, Tuesday, October 11that 7.30pm, Deanery Synod will be meeting in Tysoe, with Ruth Walker and Yvonne Warren talking about General Synod.

Many of you will know that Ali Massey, who was Curate in The Stourdene Benefice has moved on to become Rector of the Draycote Benefice in Rugby Deanery: she goes will all our blessings, and her installation there will be on Monday, 19thSeptember.

Arriving in the Deanery shortly afterwards will be Ben Dyson and his family, who is joining the SW7 Benefice as Pioneer Minister. He will hopefully be moving into Stourton, and his licensing will be on Saturday, October 22nd. Please pray for both Ali and Ben and their families as they take up their new roles and settle into new homes and environments.

While all that is happening, enjoy the Harvest, and do take the chance to join in thanking God for all the riches that he gives to us.

Every blessing, Jill

Leys Field Update

Following the meeting the Parish Council had with the developer of Leys Field, his architect, and Miranda Rogers of Stansgate, I am writing to clarify the situation.

With the outline planning permission for 15 houses comes a 106 agreement which guarantees that the section of field behind Main Street and the lower part of Whatcote road will be a public area protected from further building, and that there will be five low cost/affordable and/or social houses included in the development, which will be offered first to residents of Oxhill or their relatives.

The Parish Council has no say on how many houses will be built on The Leys. An early enquiry from an unknown developer for an option for four houses never materialized. However, had this option been proposed, it would have rendered the 106 null and void, so the open space would not have been protected and the developers could at a later date come back with another four houses, and possibly another four after that, with no benefit at all to the village, and there would have been no provision for affordable houses, which the Parish Plan states the village needs.

The developer wishes to proceed with the outline planning permission for 15 houses and therefore the 106 agreement will come into effect.

It is still at a very early stage and there will be an archaeological survey and an amphibian survey taking place. The developers state that they are keen to work with the village on this site and will take on board suggestions on architectural design and on the layout of the public area. They will come back to the PC when they have formulated more ideas. The Parish Council will then have a village meeting to discuss the proposals.

I, like most of the rest of the village, never wanted development on the Leys Field. But we cannot reverse the planning decision. All we can do is to try to work with the developers to get the best deal for the village. I will keep you posted.

The Best Local Apple Day!

.....is at your WOT2Grow Community Orchard!!

This year we will be combining the open day and apple day at the WOT2Grow Orchard, behind the allotments off the Shenington Road in Tysoe.

Please put Saturday Oct 1st from 13:30 in your diary. There will be the usual apple juicing with all the fun of chopping the apples, scratting them (find out what this is!) and then producing juice in our large press.

You get to take home the best apple juice you have tasted as confirmed by many people who have joined us in previous years. Bring along your own apples and containers for the juice but we will have lots to keep the presses going!! Great fun for all, plus activities for children, refreshments and a home made produce stall.

Biggest Coffee Morning in the World

It is coming to Oxhill, since we are the centre of the universe!

We are holding a Coffee Morning on Friday 30th September in the Village Hall between 10.00 a.m. - 12 noon in aid of Macmillan Nurses. I do hope as many of you as possible will be able to come for a coffee, cake and chat. Oxhill has a well deserved reputation for the most fabulous cakes so we would be delighted if you bakers out there (or anyone else) would be kind enough to donate a cake to this good cause. Cakes can be brought to the Village Hall by 10.00 a.m. on the day or I can collect on Thursday night if you are unable to attend. We hope to raise additional funds by selling off any surplus cakes.

Please contact me if you can donate a cake and/or wish to attend so we can have some idea of numbers but would be happy to see anyone who can make it. See you on the 30th.

Village Hall Maintenance Week

Village Hall committee members and `friends` of the Village Hall will be sprucing up the hall in our annual maintenance week, during mid-September. We hope you will appreciate the licks of new paint, tidied grounds and deep cleaning we are likely to undertake when you next use the facility.

The village Progressive Supper takes place at the start of October. This year the theme is Italian.

We gather in the village hall for drinks at 7pm, then split up into groups to enjoy starters and main courses in different houses across the village before returning to the village hall for puds. The cost to take part is £17.50 each but if you host a course there is no charge to take part.

This is a fantastic opportunity to meet one another in our homes and experience our warm and friendly village atmosphere, especially for newcomers to Oxhill.

If you would like to participate as a host or want to be a guest please contact Diana Cronin by email atdianacronin@icloud.comor by text to 07817 362561.

Anniversary of the Battle of the Somme

At this time of remembrance for the fallen of the Somme, it was interesting to read in last month’s News about the story of Charles Joseph Reason of Tysoe who died on 30th July, 1916 during that conflict. In Oxhill, we should also honour the memory of the two Gilks brothers from our village both killed on the Somme. I related their history some years ago in an article of August, 2006, but it is worth the retelling.

Both were sons of John Gilks, (full name Wheeler John), and his wife Elizabeth Ellen. Both were born in districts in the London area, (much more rural then), where their father was working at the time as a gardener. After he was widowed in 1902, John brought his family to live near his many other relatives in Oxhill, settling at Sunnyside, now Gilks Cottage in Gilkes Lane. His niece Evelyn Colyer later remembered him as a “landscape gardener” with his work mainly in larger gardens outside the village.

Arthur Wilfred Gilks was born in 1892, and died on 1st July, 1916, the first day of the battle of the Somme, aged 24, one of nearly 20,000 killed that day. He was serving in the King’s Liverpool Regiment. He has no known grave, but his name is listed on the Thiepval Memorial to the missing of the Somme.

His elder brother John Frederick was born in 1886, and died on 12th October, 1916, aged 30, while serving with the 1st Battalion, Essex Regiment, (not the 12th Battalion as listed on our Roll of Honour). This was the time of the Battle of le Transloy, a major battle of the Somme, when on 12th October, the 1st Essex Battalion fought alongside the Newfoundland Regiment at the village of Gueudecourt, five kilometres south of Bapaume. John Frederick was buried in the Bancourt British Cemetery near Calais, which was designed by Edwin Lutyens, and largely formed after the war when burials were brought in from battlefields in the area.

Their father John lived on at Sunnyside until his death in 1936. He was survived by a further two sons and four daughters, of whom two, Minnie and Mabel lived with him and cared for him in old age. A newspaper report of his funeral dated 29th August, 1936 writing of the loss of his two sons, said that he “bore his affliction with patience and fortitude”, and described him as a man of a quiet disposition who was held in high esteem.

Garden Club Outing to Bristol

On August 18th some 40 members of the Garden Club and colleagues from Tysoe and Kineton went on a most enjoyable visit by coach to Bristol. The morning was spent at the SS Great Britain. This fine old ship designed by Brunel is now in good fettle having been brought back from the Falkland Islands in the early 70s and since lovingly restored. Life was hard in those days and if you weren’t travelling first class there were few comforts aboard.

Later in the day we progressed to Tyntesfield and had a chance to see the gardens and the old house which had belonged to the Gibbs family. They made their money shipping guano from South America to Britain where it was used as fertiliser.

Thanks to Reg for organising everthing

David Whaley

Engineer, Born 1922, Died 2016

David Whaley lived in Oxhill with his second wife Eve, for many years. He was educated at Eton where as a cadet he became involved with many types of aircraft. His career began in 1941 when he started working with jet engines. This completely new field kept him busy throughout the war, after which he worked for Rolls Royce, followed by many well known British engineering companies.

David’s career evolved and he became a Chartered Patent Agent where his knowledge of engineering proved invaluable.

After retirement David worked with the British Red Cross, and also did voluntary work at Warwick Hospital.

He is survived by a son and daughter from his first marriage.
