Sunday 14 August – The Great Shakespeare Ride 2016
Oxhill, and its Village Hall, again welcomes The Great Shakespeare Ride as cyclists will make their way through Oxhill in aid of the Shakespeare Hospice to raise money to provide care and support to families in need in South Warwickshire and the North Cotswolds.
There will be three distances of ride; 40 miles, 66 miles (100 km) and 100 miles and if you wish to join in, visit www.thegreatshakespeareride.org.uk to sign up.
If you would just like to support the event in a tangible way, we are looking for volunteers to help on the day as the village hall is a ’feed stop’ for those on the 40 mile route. We need people to serve cakes, fruit and drinks on the morning and it would be great to receive some homemade cakes as they are always enjoyed by the riders.
If you can help, as above, and/or by providing a much sought after homemade cake or biscuits then please contact Tricia Harbour on (01295) 680676.

Summer term review
There have been many memorable events this term and fortunately all the outdoor occasions have had good weather. At Sports Day, children worked together in house teams, when the older children encouraged and supported the younger ones. The carousel of fun activities was followed by traditional sprints and relays.
The Summer Fete and Dog Show was well-attended and proved to be a popular community event. Dave Earle,a former champion boxer, kickboxer and Olympic torch runner, opened the event and children from his gym demonstrated their skills. Year 2 children performed maypole dancing. Many stalls and multi-sports activities kept the children entertained. The day was organised by The Friends’ and raised over £2000 for school resources, including book corners in the classrooms and to pay for swimming lessons.
Recently, the school hosted a visit by the Stratford MP, Nadhim Zahawi. During the visit, Mr Zahawi enjoyed watching a humorous performance about the Ancient Egyptians. The School Council led an informative tour of the school and discussed highlights including the field trip to Swanage.
Mr Zahawi commented that, ‘It was great to visit Tysoe Primary School and to see the progress made by Mrs Oscroft and Mrs Coates’.
There have also been many school trips to places of interest to support the children’s learning, including to Gaydon Motor Museum, Fairy Tale Farm and the Space Centre in Leicester. Music and Drama activities continue to flourish in school. Recent performances include children playing drums, guitar and ukulele. The Year 6 concert, ‘Goodbye My Friend’, was an excellent production and full of memorable anecdotes of school events, especially humorous was the nativity scene.
Finally, Year 6 had excellent achievements in the SATs national tests and this capped a happy and successful year.

Vicarage Notes
Dear friends,
To all enjoying holidays this month, may I wish safe travelling and happy days!
Saints remembered in August tend to be neglected, but we do have the opportunity to celebrate St.Lawrence on the Sunday after his day (10th) – come along to the Patronal Festival on the 14th – all welcome!
For those who enjoy local walks the setting of Winderton Church is splendid. August 21st is the one opportunity to give thanks for the life of the former “Chapel of Ease” of SS Peter and Paul, maintained as a memorial and for community purposes – all are welcome to the annual Evensong at 6.30pm.
As we hopefully enjoy a lovely summer, we give thanks for the beauty of creation and pray for all who steward the land and all involved in agriculture in these changing times.
There are quite a few modern hymns that speak of the need to care for creation, few are yet well known.
Looking at “Hymns of Glory”, one hymn includes these words:
Touch the earth lightly, use the earth gently,
Nourish the life of the world in our care:
Gifts of great wonder, ours to surrender,
Trust for the children tomorrow will bear.
God bless,
Nicholas Morgan

Horton Stone Slabs
Many of you will remember the old Hornton stone pavement that ran along part of main street. The slabs were removed because of health and safety and were going to be dumped. Fortunately I managed to save them and get them stored within the village. A couple of weeks ago I was contacted by a stonemason working on Hook Norton Church who purchased five slabs for their porch and paid £250.00 to the Parish Council. This will go towards a project to put some extra planters and a new bench by the phone box in an attempt to prevent vehicles parking on the pavement there and blocking the view for cars emerging from Back Lane. It will also provide seating for mothers and children waiting for the school bus.
There are still plenty of stone slabs available at approximately £50 each – reclamation yards currently charge £70 to £80 each. This particular stone is now quarried out, so if you want a part of old Oxhill, please contact me on 680664.

Full Steam Ahead to Oxhill
Late afternoon of Saturday the 16 July, saw the arrival of no less than Four Magnificent Steam Engines Each engine was towing its own trailer of equipment plus a further trailer for accommodation.
Having spoken with the 8 people, who I think were all under forty years old, male and female crews, they said that, they go out on trips as often as they can, work and holidays permitting, to attend Steam Shows, around the country.
This was as big trip of some 350 to 400 plus miles, starting off from their homes in Chester at the end of June, making their way to a Show at Northampton. Leaving Northampton this morning at 0600 am and arriving in Oxhill at 0600 pm for an overnight stay, that's an approx 12 hrs journey of about 50 miles. They planned to stay overnight in the lay-by, top of Whatcote Road. Then off early Sunday morning to their next Steam Show near Upton On Severn, in Worcester, after that Show they return home, having completed their slow, but no doubt, worthwhile and unique journey.

Family Sports Day
Thank you to everyone who supported the Sports Day and Dog Show on 2nd July.
Grenville judged the dog show classes with Mister Binx, a lurcher from Tysoe, being particularly successful.
Lynsey took on commentary duties for the races which included wheelbarrow, sack, egg & spoon and three-legged.
Despite the rain, it was a fun afternoon and we raised over £200 for Great Ormond Street Hospital and the Village Hall.

Remembering Those who Fell
during the Battle of the Somme WWI
On Saturday July 30th we will be ringing a quarter peal at St Mary’s Tysoe in memory of all those who gave their lives in the Battle of The Somme WW1.
In particular we remember a church bell ringer, Lance Corporal Charles Joseph Reason, of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment, 10th Bn. Charles died on 30th July 1916, aged 23, one month after the commencement of the battle. This notorious action, which resulted in so many deaths, ended on 16th November 1916.
Charles was the son of Charles and Frances Louisa Reason of Tysoe. His name is recorded on the War Memorial of both Tysoe and Allesley and appears in ‘The Great War Memorial Book of Church Bell Ringers in St. Paul’s Cathedral, London.
Charles was baptised on 10th September 1893 at St Mary’s, Tysoe.
In the 1911 Census he is aged 17 and described as a coal porter. He had six siblings. It appears that Charles Joseph later moved to Allesley as a gardener to the Venerable Archdeacon Bree of Allesley and worked alongside Charlie and Richard Philpott, who were also from Tysoe.
We felt it fitting that a quarter peal of Grandsire Doubles, (1,260 changes), should be rung by a joint band from Allesley and Tysoe. The band will be:
Ian Thompson - Allesley
Mike Chester - Allesley
Amanda Slater - Allesley
David Rake - Tysoe
Catherine Kimmins - Oxhill & Tysoe
David Bell - Tysoe
If anyone knows of any living relatives still in Tysoe we hope you will let us know. Ringing will begin at 3.00 p.m. and last approximately 45 minutes. We hope you will enjoy it and give a thought to all who gave their lives.
‘Lest we forget…’
David Bell Tower Captain, St Mary’s Tysoe
WOT2Grow - Community Orchard
Summer, summer wherefore art thou summer? Could be the cry heard all around the area as we at the orchard and local gardeners bemoan the lack of summer this year! Water in abundance has caused massive growth but we need the sun and warmth to ripen the crops.
Despite this the trees at the orchard have thrived and fruit is growing, the June drop was done twice and then the July thinning was done twice! The trees are still very young with thin branches so we need to make sure they don’t suffer from prolific fruiting. Controlling the rosy apple aphid this year with organic spraying has made a big difference to the apples and all the trees are still free from most pests and diseases.
The berries have come into their own after a few warm days and although not as sweet, due to lack of sun, they are cropping pretty well. It is lovely to pick fresh berries that have had no chemicals applied and no pesticides so they can be eaten straight from the canes. Nothing quite like them as our members will confirm.
The blackbirds did strip the red currants before we could net them even though they were unripe but we have plans to foil them next year!
The bees are surviving and we have had a swarm to add to one of the hives so hopefully honey is on its way.
So things are going well at the orchard so why not join us and benefit from the harvest - if you need more info contact one of us

Members have enjoyed several trips recently, the Malvern Show and Blenheim Flower and Garden show. Our president Jacqui who also runs Progardens with Alan her husband and their team enjoyed great success at both of these events. Silver gilt at Malvern, and Gold and Best in Show at Blenheim, what an achievement, well done.
Our next "outing" will be our August tea, on 3rd. August, a coach trip, on a vintage bus, followed by a cream tea on a river cruise at Evesham, rounded off with pimms on the lawn on our return. We are all looking forward to a day at the seaside, Bournemouth, on August 10th, there may still be a few seats left when you read this. £16 per person. Contact Dee 680971
We are also taking on the responsibility for the teas at this year’s Tysoe flower show on August 20th. This is a wonderful event for the village and organised by the village. If you would like to do "your bit" to help, we are looking for donations of cakes and scones. If you are able to help, please contact Liz 680386
Our September meeting on the 7th will be "Dogs for Good" (formerly Dogs for the Disabled) with Andy Jenkins. 7.30pm in the village hall. Everyone welcome.
We have a number of events planned for the Autumn, which we will list in September's Record.

The Annual Boules Match
We were very fortunate to have a glorious sunny day on Sunday July 17th for the Annual Boules Match. It was fairly certain that nobody had done any training, practice or polishing the boules to get a favourable spin on them. The pitch (is that the right word?) had similarly been neglected for the past year. All of these factors conspired to produce a level playing field.
Stuart had developed a new improved scoring system which meant you couldn’t get eliminated without playing a few games. Indeed, some folks eliminated early were parachuted back in to make up the numbers and stood a real chance of winning.
After a plate of cheese, pate and salad optionally followed by a pudding, we got down to business. Some folk had travelled all the way from Tysoe, and there were youngsters watching and learning, which can only mean that in a few years the oldsters will at last have some serious competition.
A few pictures are better than a thousand words on any subject, and boules is no exception. So here are a few pics possibly arranged in order of youngest first.
You know I thought you were bringing the boules.....
Hmm, so this is what the grown ups do when they go out.
Minutes of a Meeting of Oxhill Parish Council

A letter will be sent to the owner of the drone.

Stour Singers call out for Tenors and Basses
Now established for more than 40 years, Stour Singers begins rehearsals for its Christmas Concert on 8 September and, to put it bluntly, wants more men! A healthy, active membership of around 90 already has a solid core of nine tenors and eight basses, with room for a few additional recruits to enhance the balance with its secure soprano and alto sections.
An exciting Christmas programme features the baritone Robert Rice, and includes excerpts from Handel’s Messiah, Vaughan Williams’ Five Mystical Songs, Telemann’s Allein Gott in die Hoeh, and carols for audience participation, all supported by the Birmingham Conservatoire Orchestra (the Queen’s Park Sinfonia).
Singing is enjoyable, life-affirming, and proven to benefit both health and longevity. Although the choir has many experienced, able singers, previous experience is not essential, nor is the ability to read music, as choir members are provided with CDs of their singing parts, if needed.
Rehearsals are every Thursday from 7.30.p.m., starting on 8thSeptember, at Shipston Primary School, Station Road, and the Christmas Concert will take place on December 10thin St. Edmund’s Church.
If you would like to join Stour Singers, there is more information on the website: www.stoursingers.org.uk or contact Ian Buchanan, Membership Secretary, on 01608 730323, email ian@buchanahn.co.uk
