Speed Checks
Four villagers have been trained by the local police to use a speed camera to check on the much complained about speeding through our village. During the course of May we are out and about, mainly on Whatcote Rd and Green Lane to carry out checks and report those who are speeding. We will be reporting further on our findings.

Oxhill Celebrates the Queen's 90th Birthday
Here’s an update on the village celebrations for the Queen’s 90th birthday weekend this month, with all you need to know to join in.
Over the weekend of 11th & 12th June the nation will be celebrating the Queen’s official 90th birthday and in true Oxhill style we will be doing likewise with our own version of the national royal gala and picnic and cathedral service, with the added bonus of live music at the Peacock on the Friday night to start the weekend.
Thursday 9 June - A band of ringers ringing a number of quarter peals at towers in the area are expected to ring at St Lawrence’s Church in Oxhill at 11am to recognise the Queen’s birthday.
Friday 10 June - Music at the Peacock featuring Barney and Jerv from 8.30pm.
Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 June - Come and see the Celebration of Flowers in the Church.
Sunday 12 June - Oxhill’s version of the National Service of Thanksgiving at St. Paul's Cathedral (held on 10 June) and The Queen’s Birthday Parade and Patron’s Lunch (held on 12 June) will be:
9.30am to 10.30am - Songs of Praise, St Lawrence’s Church. A special service where we are inviting requests for hymns to sing in honour of the Queen. Iain Lauchlan will be playing music and there will be flowers in the church, with coffee and cakes served at the end of the service. Please send your hymn requests to the Reverend Jill Tucker at revjill.tucker @ tiscali.co.uk.
12noon - A Parade for the Queen. We host our version of the parade with a parade by Oxhill’s children (ex-children welcome too i.e. adults!). The parade will start at 12 noon from the Church and take in Green Lane, Whatcote Road and Main Street before ending at the venue of our celebratory lunch (see below). We hope the parade will be led by Morris dancers - and do join in!
There will be a Crowning Glory competition with a prize for the best made crown and also prizes for the best dressed children who dress with a royal or patriotic theme.
12noon to 1pm - Games on the Field (Jill and Colin Tucker’s field near Back Lane). Children and adults join in for organised family games led by Ali Sayer including egg and spoon and sack races, plus French cricket or football (or whatever else is available on the day). Who needs `It’s a Royal Knockout`!
1pm - Royal Gala Lunch. A village lunch on Jill and Colin Tucker’s field near Back Lane (please enter via the gate on the lane) in honour of the Queen, where you are invited to bring a picnic. Please bring your own first and main course, drinks, plates, cutlery and seating (the field will be open from 9am if you want to set up chairs, tables and any Gazebos in advance). As this is also intended as a sharing meal, with the idea being that we share part of our food in true community style, it would be great if each party could bring a pudding dish or cheese to share (any size welcome, large or small), which we will be placed on a central table to divide up.
`Patrons` coming to the lunch need to nominate a picnic leader who should contact Katy Dowding on 688194 or
kdowding @ me.com, and let her know the size and name of your group coming to the lunch and to agree with Katy what dessert dish you will be sharing. Book your picnic group with Katy by Monday 6 June.
We will also have an `Open Table` hosted by Jill and Colin if you want to come but will not be attending as part of a group on this occasion. Please let Katy know if you if you wish to join this table. We really don’t want anyone to miss out!
And don’t forget to wear red, white and blue or `look regal` as there will be prizes for the best themed picnic group or person.
Later - Music at The Peacock
WATCH OUT FOR OUR SPECIAL VIP APPEARANCE ON 12 JUNE!! IT’S NOT TO BE MISSED…
Vicarage Notes
Dear friends,
The Queen’s Birthday
Children in our local primary schools are being given a little Scripture Union booklet entitled “The Servant Queen”. This includes an insight into H.M’s faith, with extracts from her Christmas speeches, eg
For me, the life of Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, whose birth we celebrate today, is an inspiration and an anchor in life. A role model of reconciliation and forgiveness, he stretched out his hands in love, acceptance and healing. (2014)
All are warmly invited to the appropriately named service on the 12th!
The Trinity Season
The green altar frontal will now be on the high altar in St.Lawrence’s as we begin our journey through the many Sundays after Trinity. Green is the colour of life and growth, and we ask for God’s blessing on us as we share church and community life, with all the special occasions, summer events, and for me, a veritable cornucopia of christenings. So we go forward together, knowing that our Lord is always by our side, as expressed in that lovely passage folk call “footprints”!
God bless,
Nicholas Morgan

Deanery News
It was lovely to see so many taking part in the Pilgrimage: it was a very special time, and we enjoyed the most wonderful hospitality. So a big thank you to everyone who helped in any way, and I trust that in whatever way you journeyed with us between Ascension and Pentecost, it was a time of renewal and refreshment for you, and a chance to spend time with our living Lord.
On Tuesday, June 7th, at 7.30 pm in St. George’s Church, Brailes, Tom and Emma Moffatt are coming to Deanery Synod to spill the beans on their recent trip to Ethiopia: ‘Ethiopia: the wonders and glories of its history, church and people’. Everyone is invited, and because it is summer we want to begin with drinks (Prosecco and fruit juice) and nibbles: if you are able to help by bring a plate of nibbles that would be wonderful, but absolutely not compulsory!
Later in the month, Bishop John will be visiting the Deanery, and leading a special service of healing in all its dimensions, which will include the ministry of healing. This is for everyone – to worship and encounter God together. The service is on Thursday, June 30th, at 7.30 pm in St. Edmund’s Church, Shipston.
Finally, please remember in your prayers Sarah Bourne and Nikki Moon (now based in Harbury) as they are ordained priest in the Cathedral on July 2nd.
And do enjoy the Queen’s Birthday Celebrations!
Every blessing, Jill

Matters Raised
The Leys Field
This is being advertised weekly in the local papers. There will be a contribution of approximately £26,000 under the 106 legislation which will be used to enhance a public space at the bottom end of the field near the footpath and behind dwellings on the Whatcote Road.
Highways
The white lines on the Green Lane – these are to be reinstated as part of resurfacing works on the Green Lane this summer. The Parish Council has been assured by the Highways department at Stratford District Council that the foot path on Main Street has been allocated a works number and will be repaired during this financial year. Highways will be contacted yet again with regard to this matter.
Radar Gun
4 members of the community have been trained and will during the month of May using the equipment that has been delivered to monitor people’s speed through the village at several intervals. A report will be provided for the Oxhill news from the group.
Lorries passing through the Village via Main Street
Highways will be contacted to see if there is a legal weight limit through the village to see if this can be prevented.
There were no further matters raised.
Lis Stuart
Parish Clerk
Tuesday 10th May at 8.00pm in the Chapel.
The meeting, chaired by Grenville Moore and was attended by Councillors David Hill and Sue Hunt, apologies were received by Stuart Whittaker and Carol Taylor. 14 members of the public attended.
Minutes – Minutes of the previous meeting were read, agreed and signed.
Matters arising –
Rural Housing Questionnaire - A copy of this will be put on the village website, a summary will be published in the Oxhill News and can be viewed by contacting Lis Stuart, Parish Clerk at Oak View, Green Lane, Oxhill. The survey reinforces the findings of the previously published Parish Plan, which is positive.
Highways – Several near misses have been noted on the corner of Green Lane highways will be contacted to ensure that the white lines are to be reinstated this summer.
Planning – Donna Savage attended the meeting to present proposed drawings for Plot 3 on the Green Lane, she has been consulting with Stratford District Planning department to find a suitable design for the third submission. The Parish Council were in agreement that the latest design was much better and when considering the information presented in principle would be in favour but would need to consider the other documentation when it was submitted in full before committing to a decision.
Mark Blackman also attended and presented a design for Fithers Field. There is no application submitted to the District Council currently as he and his client wished to consult with the Parish Council before doing so. The proposal was to take down the existing dwelling then to erect several dwellings in a courtyard design. As much of the land lies outside the curtilage of the village the consensus was that the Council would object to an application as on several previous occasions. Councillor Moore also brought up the matter that as a LSV Category 4 village the requirement was to absorb 32 new dwellings before 2031 and that Oxhill currently has 44 applications in the system currently an increase of more than 33%
Applications refused for the carpenters shop, Plot two on the Green Lane has been passed.
Finance
An insurance quote had been received from Zurich as this showed a large increase the Clerk will contact them and challenge the proposal.
Receipts and Payment Book for the year ended 31 March 2016 was signed by the Chairman.
Audit account and Bank reconciliation were presented and signed by the Chairman.
A cheque for £30 for the account audit was signed.
Resignations
Resignations have been received and accepted from Councillors David Hill and Carol Taylor after many years of service. Grenville Moore thanked David Hill who was present for his years of service on the Council and extended his thanks to Carol Taylor who was not present.
A notice has been displayed advertising the vacancies in accordance with legislation.
There being no other business the meeting closed at 8.45pm
Date of the next meeting Tuesday 12th July 2016 8.00pm in the Village Hall.
Date of Next Meeting

Village Hall Annual General Meeting
This year’s AGM was held on April 27th.
John McKail, Treasurer, reported another satisfactory year whereby the funds in the Bank slightly exceeded last year’s total despite the expenditure of a couple of thousand pounds on improvements to the Hall.
Stuart Whittaker, who was Chairman for the last year, reported that we had enjoyed another year of great support from the Village with good attendances at a variety of different events held every month. Attendances at the Knit and Natter group that meets on alternate Thursdays during the winter months have also stayed at a reasonable level and the introduction of the Village Big Breakfast has been welcomed enthusiastically.
Stuart thanked all of the Committee for their hard work over the last few years in making the Village Hall a success and in particular thanked those who have stood down after making a great contribution: Gaynor van Dijk, Gill Stewart & Roger Goodman.
Being a registered charity, all of the ‘profit’ made at all the events from tickets sales, raffles, etc. goes towards maintaining and improving the Village Hall facility for the villagers. There are a number of exciting new events and groups planned for the Village Hall in the next twelve months, keep an eye out for updates in the Oxhill Village News and on the Village Notice Boards.
Aside from those who have stood down, a couple of people have changed roles and the new Committee is as follows:
Stuart Whittaker - Chairman (01295) 688194
Karen Barker – Deputy Chair
Jay Roberts – Secretary
John MacKail - Treasurer
Lisa Connolly - Lettings (01295) 680091
Adrian Marklew - Publicity
Derek Harbour, Tricia Harbour

Big Match
The Big Match is on Again!
Saturday 27th August – Tysoe v Oxhill Rangers
Following last year’s dramatic last ball victory for Tysoe in the now annual Cricket fixture against Oxhill, I am sure all village cricket lovers will want to know the date of this year’s contest.
So make a note in your diary and continue to enjoy the delights of all that village cricket has to offer…wonderful surroundings, sumptuous teas, friendly rivalry, plenty of beer and the chance of seeing yet another classic cricket match. What more could you ask for!
Of course players are the most important factor and we would ask those who nobly fought last year’s battle to take note of the date and make themselves available for selection again. Please remember too that we try to have a junior under 13s match in the morning and will need you to encourage your children to take part.
Contact Stuart Whittaker (688194) or Adam Jordan (07590 960992) for the adult team and Catherine Kimmins (680452) for the junior’s.
Village Hall Events

Summer Term
The children have been out and about making the most of the warmer weather. The older children have a residential trip to Swanage to enjoy a beach study and delight in rock pools. Activities also include following a trail and learning about key characters in the town. Time away from home helps children to develop independence and participate in teamwork.
Recently the youngest children enjoyed finding out about animals from a visiting vet, as part of their Pet Theme. Another exciting event was the arrival of a hen house which the children scrubbed in preparation for the class chickens. Not to be outdone, Class 2 have been caring for caterpillars and watching how quickly they grow. A net cage is all ready for the next stage in the life cycle and daily observations are eagerly made.
Another informative visit was to the Gurdwara in Leamington. Years 3 and 4 are learning about Sikhism and they really impressed their guide with their knowledge and understanding of the beliefs and stories from the first Gurus.
As part of the preparation for the recent SATs tests, a mental maths week was held. All classes practised number bonds and times tables. Certificates were awarded for good progress and also to the highest achievers. The children then completed their tests with maturity and effort, to make everyone very proud of them.
Coming up soon, lots of events are planned to commemorate the Queen’s birthday. Classes will learn about the Commonwealth and study one country for a themed week.
There is always the opportunity for any prospective parent to visit and see the school in action. Please contact Mrs Horrocks on 01295-680244 to make an appointment.

Great food and great company .....
WOT2Grow - Community Orchard
A little bit of summer makes a big difference! A few days of warm sun after a lot of rain transformed the orchard into a sea of dandelions and boughs of blossom. All the trees have burst forth apart from the very late apples which are showing good signs of life but are waiting to come into flower. This year the cherries have really shown their beautiful blossom including the ones we grafted from our original trees which might not have the best shape but have been covered in flowers. More summer please!
Weeding, feeding and mulching of the trees has been a major task and is well on the way to completion. Feeding the soft fruit has begun and the comfrey tea we make is providing a rich source of potash for the plants along with the nettle tea which has more nitrogen. Both are made at the orchard by steeping comfrey and nettles in water butts! Simple but effective.
The currants and gooseberries are covered in flowers which are attractive to the bees as is the pear blossom and the dandelions so we are providing good food right on their doorstep. The wild flowers and sensory garden are also doing their bit and we are slowly building an environment that is beneficial for all.
All of this work is done by volunteers who are making sure the plants are tended, the grass is cut and eventually the fruit is picked. Why not come and join us or at least give an hour of your time to ensure this wonderful amenity is there for all to enjoy.

Lamb & Curry Lunch
April 10th
A big, big thank you to everyone, to those who helped prepare, who bought tickets and to those who helped clear away. Special thanks to our unofficial committee members Gerry and Kate who are always stalwarts and to Gaynor and Jo for acquiring the drinks for us and managing the donation bar (at almost the eleventh hour). Due to a very good turnout of "lunchers" the event was successful in raising £800 for church improvements. Thank you all very much.

Le Tour d'Oxhill

On May 12th they came through Oxhill, taking a short break at the Peacock en route from John O'Groats to Paris al in 7 Days.
This terrific venture led by Andy MacDonald raised money for research into a disease called Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.
OWLS - Spring Ramble
Sunday 8th May
“If you go out with the OWLS today, you’re in for a BIG surprise!”
Foregoing the chance to have a barbecue on the hottest, sunniest day of the year so far, a small group of us took part in the first of the OWLS nature rambles this year. We started with a leisurely stroll through the churchyard area which is under wildlife management. The spring flowers were in evidence, and there were encouraging signs that the management regime would lead to a good late spring and summer display. Among the trees was a rare whitebeam with spectacular silver leaves. We then wandered round the big pond at the back of Bilton Cottage to reveal some expected and unexpected pleasures. There was a catalogue of strange nests and holes to be observed, and the children with us were quick to spot a disappearing moorhen. To be honest, we weren’t too surprised to unearth the skull of a heron, and the abandoned fallow deer antler - we had made sure they would be found so that nobody would get bored! – but we were taken aback to find very fresh signs of a large deer: droppings, technically known as “deer poo”, and a trail of hoof prints which again the children were first to see.
The absolute highlight of the afternoon, though, was a pond-dipping session in a garden pond. We all gave in to the childhood delights of stopping and staring, to see, among the pond skaters and water boatmen, scores of newts, both common and Great Crested. Be warned: don’t try the following at home: some newts are protected, and it is illegal to disturb them. Fortunately Grenville, our Newtfinder General, is licensed to handle protected species, and he amazed us all by catching with his bare hands a succession of Great Crested, common newts and dragonfly larvae for us to examine before dropping them back.
The net result of a low-key but thoroughly enjoyable afternoon was to be reminded yet again of the wealth of wildlife which exists within 100 yards of Main Street. Let’s all do what we can to preserve it!

Kineton Surgery
Dear Patients,
From March 2016 all patients can request access to online services.
Online services do not replace traditional ways of contacting the practice, over the phone or in person. They simply offer additional ways to interact with your GP, making it easier and more convenient.
For example, you can book and cancel appointments any time of the day, order your repeat prescription from home or at work, save yourself a trip to the practice, or look up your medications online.
In return, it's hoped the services will free up phone lines for people with no internet access, and enable GP practices to manage appointments and telephone calls more efficiently.
There are currently three transactional services available:
1. Booking appointments
2. Repeat prescriptions
3. Access to GP records
To register, you have to speak to the practice in person and request a registration letter, which will enable you to set up a full account. Enter the details from the letter into the online registration form. This registration method ensures your identity can be verified by your GP practice and your personal details cannot be accessed by others.
Our new services are running very well but if you feel as a surgery there is more we can do please do not hesitate to contact us on 01926 640471.
Regards
Jenny, Raj and the team.

Edgehill Bellringers
All towers in the Edgehill area were rung over the Christmas period and several people within earshot came to say how wonderful it was to hear the bells at that time of year. Hopefully the ringing is appreciated at other times of the year as well!
At Easter Quarter peals were rung on Easter Sunday at Chadshunt, Burton Dassett, Radway, Avon Dassett, and Butlers Marston. On Easter Monday at Alderminster, Honington, Halford, Farnborough and Hanwell.
Queen’s 90th Birthday
There will be a lot of ringing to celebrate the Queen’s 90th Birthday. Two peals were rung on 21 April, the first at Burton Dassett where it took 3 hours and 4 minutes and the second at Honington – 2 Hours and 56 minutes. The peal at Burton Dassett was the first peal at this church for 40 years.
There was a peal at Shotteswell on the 30th March and another at Radway on the 24th April.
Quarter peals are planned in many of the local churches during the week of celebrations in June for the official birthday and on Saturday the 11th June there will be a bell ringing tour of churches in the area. On Sunday the 12th June Kineton Church tower will be open for everyone to come and see and ‘have a go’ to celebrate the occasion so during the afternoon come and ‘Ring for the Queen’!!
The wedding season is upon us with many weddings to ring for but with other commitments finding enough people to ring for some of churches is difficult. More ringers are needed – particularly in some of the smaller villages. So if you would like a different but interesting new activity – get in touch via the Edgehill ringers web pages.
Tour - The ringers annual outing is planned for the Hook Norton area in July – a tour of the brewery is going to be the lunchtime attraction!
Restoration - The fundraising efforts at Pillerton Hersey are going well and it looks now that an order could be placed before long to restore their three bells for ringing and add a bell from Adlestrop that they have purchased - a project for 2017.
The annual Peal at St Peter’s Kineton is planned for the 26th July so listen out for us

Be Part Of It
At the recent Annual Parish Meeting, the St Lawrence Electoral Roll was declared as comprising 39 persons – not a large number considering the general regard in which the Church is held by those residing in the village.
As an architectural feature and landmark the church is an integral part of Oxhill – indeed the activities that take place there, be they the weekly services or less frequent christenings, weddings and funerals, are part of village life. Occasional secular / fund raising events such as scarecrow weekends, lamb and curry lunches and barn dances (Saturday 17th September this year) bring villagers together to enjoy one another’s company and help give Oxhill its unique character.
If you’ve not been inside St Lawrence’s recently, drop in and enjoy a few moments’ tranquility in newly decorated surroundings – and maybe, as a friend of the church, pick up a form to complete and be part of the Electoral Roll.

Timely Advice from the Police
Distraction burglary
- remember - You don't have to open the door
Most callers are genuine, but some aren't. Burglars won't go to the trouble of breaking in if they can just knock and be invited in. So always be on guard when unexpected visitors - men, women or even children - turn up at the door.
Occasionally some callers will pretend to be on official business from utility companies (gas, electricity, water) or the council. They may pretend to be tradespeople who are calling to carry out urgent repairs or may claim that they have lost something in your back garden.
To protect yourself from distraction burglary:
beware of anyone who says they are in a hurry - if in doubt, call a neighbour or friend
check to see who is at the door by using your door viewer, or looking through a front window
always put the chain on before you open the door as this is a barrier against unwanted callers
when an unexpected caller claims they work for one of the utility companies, they must be able to quote your password and unique customer number and produce an identity card:
all of the utility companies operate password schemes - contact the customer services department and set up a password with them
make a note of your customer number, which can be found at the top of the utility bill and keep it handy - this number is unique to your household
as added proof of identity, genuine trades people should carry an identification card with their photograph on -check this carefully and keep the chain on
if you're unsure about the caller's identity telephone the company the caller claims to represent, but don't rely on them giving you the number as it may be false - genuine callers won't mind waiting
if you're still unsure, ask the caller to come back later so that you can arrange for a friend or relative to be present
Home
Burglaries are often committed by opportunist thieves. This section gives a range of measures that can be put in place to prevent a burglary but once in place they must be adopted at all times. You may think you are secure, however, it's possible to get into a routine and not realise the opportunity you are presenting to a thief.
These are some of the common errors:
leaving doors open when working in the garden
leaving doors unlocked when watching television
leaving windows open in areas that are accessible to a thief, such as a flat roof or rear window next to garden furniture that can be used as a climbing aid
not locking up last thing at night assuming that someone in the house has already done it
in hot weather leaving downstairs windows or doors open.
just popping to neighbours and leaving the door unlocked
