Mobile Library

The library van has books withlarge print, ordinary print, picture books, children's books, paperbacks, non-fiction, novels, sagas, crime, mysteries, adventures, westerns and romance. The van also has talking books, cassettes and CDs.

The library van will continue to visit Oxhill every 3rd Friday, stopping at the Village Hall at 2:30pm and staying there for 30 minutes.

This month the van will visit us on Friday 6th & 27th at 2:30pm.

Refuse Collections

Recycling and green waste bins (blue and green bins) will be collected on Tuesdays 3rd, 17th and 31st.

The grey rubbish bins will be collected on Tuesday 10th and 24th.

Marianne Swan

Marianne Josephine Swan passed away peacefully on the 15th April. There will be a ceremony at Oakley Wood Crematorium at 12 noon on the 4th of May, with refreshments afterwards. All are welcome. Family flowers only please and donations in aid of St Lawrence’s Church, Oxhill.

My mother, June Marvin passed away at her home on March 3rd having suffered with deteriorating health for some years. She and my father moved all the way from Pillerton Priors to Oxhill almost 14 years ago, enjoying village life together for about 18 months before my father died. Our whole family was touched by the number of friends old and new who offered support, attended her funeral and helped me with the organisation and catering for the Wake. I would like to thank everyone who helped, especially: Lilian and Linda who made the church look beautiful with Spring flowers as well as helping with catering; the fabulous and efficient kitchen team of Gaida, Gerry, Sue, Mike, Debra, Maria and Verity; all the lovely ladies who baked delicious cakes; Mary for doggie daycare; Jill and Duncan who carried out their professional duties with warmth and compassion. You are all part of my Oxhill family and you make our village such a special place to live. I can never thank you enough.

Oxhill to welcome the DashMAX Pelton

Last year I learnt about a disease called Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy which is an incurable, muscle wasting disease that kills more children (almost exclusively boys) than any other genetic condition. I’d never heard of it before until a close friend and ex-second row partner told me his little 3 year old boy Felix had been diagnosed and it was just a matter of time. There is accelerating deterioration from birth, resulting in a significant decrease in quality of life by age 7 to 8, wheelchair dependency by early teens, total dependency by late teens and a lingering death in mid-twenties from lung failure and heart disease. Basically these little boys are knackered, and there are hundreds of thousands of them around the world, it’s indiscriminate and they are all in the same sinking boat.

Last year a few of us took part in the Duchenne Dash, a 24 hour ride from London to Paris for the Duchenne Children’s Trust which is singularly focussed in funding the development of a treatment and ultimately a cure for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. It works with 2 other sister charities trying to accelerate drug trials which are beginning to show a glimmer of hope. You may have seen Owen Farrell hook his fingers together after kicking a goal in the six nations, which signifies “Joining Jack” one of the sister charities.

This year, together with my friend Ali, and two ex-military polar explorers you may have seen on a BBC documentary winning the first unsupported race to the North Pole “The Challenge”, we decided to organise a slightly longer version suggested starting from John O’Groats linking with the Duchenne Dash riders in London for the final 24 hour leg to Paris, all within 7 days starting on 6th May. The event we named the Duchenne DashMAX has taken off and we now have 65 riders, 7 British Lions (including Will Carling, Roger Uttley and Rob Wainwright), 2 Olympic medallists and many sponsored corporate riders riding alongside us on legs of the journey.

Also being route planner, I have managed to sneak a detour via Oxhill on stage 7 from Walton Hall into London and will be coming through with about 40 riders, motorcycle outriders and support crew on Thursday 12th May between 8.30-9.30am approximately on our way to Blenheim Palace.

Howdy Councillors!

I must say how encouraged I was to hear of Mister Poisson's generous plan to equip Oxhill with its very own heliport - just the sort of forward thinking your sleepy old community needs to bring it right up to date with the prevailing zeitgeist.

Such an imaginative development convinces me that Oxhill is the perfect location for Worldwide Hydro's next generating complex, bigger than any yet contemplated in the western world. Our extensive survey of your Oxhill 'Torrent' during recent optimal flow conditions suggests a 10 gigawatt output to be readily achievable from a multi-spindle through-axis sintered turbine gang, easily accommodated in the existing cellar of the Manor House. It is expected that very little impact will therefore be made on the ancient landscape, except possibly by the Vale of the Red Horse dam. Whilst visible from space, it will be unlikely to impede many residents' views, as our research shows that most Oxhill front rooms face in the opposite direction.

Although the turbine hall sluices will produce a degree of audio stimulation, an independent sound survey carried out by our subsidiary Worldwide Ear Defenders Inc indicates that most people find the sound of running water to be extremely restful, adding to our overall enhancement of your locale. Protection of indigenous wildlife will, of course, be high on our agenda. Rather than relying on conventional relocation methods, we will use a specialised process known as 'real-time concrete encapsulation' to ensure long-term preservation of all creatures in the affected area.

Outline plans are in hand to further capitalise on the development with the provision of a water slide and power boating park, and investment is being sought for an international seaplane terminal to complement the anticipated heliport. I'm sure I can count on your wholehearted support for this imaginative proposal.

Aerobics

We are holding an aerobics group in the Village Hall on Mondays from 10.00 to 11.00 am.

This will be based on the Rosemary Conley’s fitness workout which caters for all ages and levels of fitness. The session is in two parts – 35 mins aerobics work out followed by 20 mins body conditioning!!! If you only want a part of the session, that’s fine. If you want to bring along your baby – that’s fine too.

Cost to cover village hall hire will be £1 to £2 depending on numbers.

An audience without Jake Thackray

Another successful music night was held in the Village Hall in April. This time something slightly different to previous events, with a highly entertaining show by John Watterson as Fake Thackray and his interpretation of the songs of sixties song writer, poet, and chansonnier Jake Thackray. The songs, which ranged from satirical to bawdy to sentimental to pastoral, and a strong emphasis on storytelling, were delivered perfectly by John to an appreciative audience. John managed to capture the clipped delivery style of Jake, singing the songs in the original Yorkshire accent. The hall was again virtually full with Oxhill music lovers, and some travelling from Stratford, and even Stockport !

This will help monitor the wildlife in and around Oxhill. Children will be very welcome and there will be an exciting quiz for them to do on the way.

At the time of going to press, your present Village Hall Committee was preparing for the Village Hall AGM, held on 27 April. A new committee will be formed by the time you read this. Thanks go to everyone who served on the committee during the past 12 months!

Friday 20 May - Paella Night

Hola! It’s Spanish night on Friday 20 May when paella is on the menu at the village hall - with the big vote on the EU just over a month away!

We will be sharing authentic Paella prepared by the senors and senoritas of Oxhill in a giant pan in the kitchen, in which there should be something for everyone to eat; including seafood, chicken, chorizo and rice. We successfully held a similar night several years ago.

We know the principle of a shared meal among friends and neighbours from the community goes down well, so we hope you will support us. Desserts included, with Spanish beer and wines available to compliment.

Tickets are £10 each and available now from Tricia Harbour on 680676. The night starts at 7.30pm.

Queen's 90th Birthday Celebration

Remember the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations in 2012 and the great show the people of Oxhill put on, despite the weather!

Over the weekend of11 and 12 Junethe nation will be celebrating the Queen’s official 90thbirthday and in true Oxhill style we will be doing likewise with our own version of the national royal gala and picnic, and cathedral service; with hopefully the added bonus of live music at the Peacock (subject to confirmation).

Sunday 12 June- Oxhill’s version of the National Service of Thanksgiving at St. Paul's Cathedral (held on 10 June) and The Queen’s Birthday Parade and Patron’s Lunch (held on 12 June) will be:

9.30am to 10.30am - Songs of Praise, St Lawrence’s Church. A special service where we are inviting requests for hymns to sing in honour of the Queen. Coffee and cakes will be served at the end of the service. All weekend there will be a Celebration of Flowers in the church. Please send your hymn requests to the Reverend Jill Tucker atrevjill.tucker@tiscali.co.uk.

12noon - AParade for the Queen. We host our version of the parade with a parade by Oxhill’s children (ex-children welcome too i.e. adults!). The parade will be from the church, will take in the village and will end up at the venue of our celebratory picnic (to be confirmed). There will be a Crowning Glory competition with a prize for the best made crown and also prizes for the best dressed children who dress with a royal or patriotic theme.

12noon to 1pm - Games on the field.Children and adults join in for family games including rounders, French cricket or football (whatever’s available on the day) on the Chapel Field.Who needs `It’s a Royal Knockout`!

1pm-Royal Gala Lunch. A celebratory lunch where you are invited to bring a dish for six people, your own drink, plates, cutlery and seating for a village picnic in honour of the Queen. This is Oxhill’s Royal Gala and Sharing Meal, with the idea being that all the food is shared in true community style. Donated dishes will be placed on a special trestle table with all invited to tuck in.

`Patrons` coming to the lunch need to nominate a picnic leader who should contact Katy Dowding on 688194orkdowding@me.com,and let her know the name of your group coming to the lunch and to agree with Katy the dish you will be sharing. Knit & Natter

Due to the Election of a new Police & Crime Commissioner that takes place in the Village Hall on the 5th May, there will be no Knit & Natter that day.

We usually finish our 'season' in May so it was decided to cease having sessions from the end of April this year until we re-start on Thursday, 8th September from 2:00pm until 4pm.

Deanery News

Ascension Day is Thursday, May 5th: we always mark this with aDeanery Ascension Day CommunionServicein the evening, hopefully starting outside before moving in. This year we will be at Sutton-under-Brailes, beginning at 7.30pm, and our preacher will be Rev. Greg Bartlem of Urban Hope.

So many people are supporting Urban Hope, and once again this year we have sent them the collections from our Deanery Lent Services. This year you have donated £1543.89 – so a huge thank you to all who were so generous in their giving. Greg wrote to say:

To our wonderful friends in the Shipston Deanery,

We were overjoyed and taken aback to receive a huge cheque of £1543.89 towards our work at Urban Hope in Coventry. The church is growing but as I am sure you will be aware, our community are not very affluent! Easter was a very special time for us not least because we also celebrated our 5th birthday on Easter day! We held a bonfire in the evening of Good Friday to celebrate alongside our normal Easter activities - it was very busy! Other news includes the fact that we are moving (tentatively) into Youth Homelessness - with a half time worker at Bardsley working alongside us and the YMCA to advocate on behalf of the young people when the system appears to be failing them. This has been funded by a one off grant from a national charity (we never expected to get this - God is good!)

So please do come along to Sutton-under-Brailes on May 5thto catch up with him!

Between Ascension Day and Pentecost on May 15th, we are invited to take part in theDiocesan Pilgrimage. Bishop David will be walking along the Centenary and Shakespeare Ways in the SOUTH of the diocese. The route will be:

We are encouraged to complete the entire route. However, if that's not possible, we are very welcome to join in for just one or two sections of a route. The pilgrimage concludes with a Pentecost Beacon Event at Coventry Cathedral. This will feature a live video link with the Archbishop of Canterbury and sung worship led by Noel Richards. We anticipate the service starting at 5:00 pm on Sunday 15 May, and refreshments will be available in the cathedral ruins from 4:00 pm onwards.

Finally, looking ahead, the next Deanery Synod will be on Tuesday, June 7that 7.30 pm in Brailes Church. We are planning to include a Bring and Share selection of nibbles, and the odd glass of Prosecco, as well as listening to Tom and Emma Moffatt talking about their recent pilgrimage to Ethopia.

Tysoe Open Gardens

4th & 5th June 2016, 2:00 - 6:00pm

For the very first time a group of 10 gardens in Upper and Middle Tysoe are opening in aid of the National Gardens Scheme. The NGS is a charity which raises money through organising the opening of mainly private gardens for its beneficial charities such as Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Help the Hospices (of which Shipston Home Nursing is a beneficiary) and other caring charities. The NGS has donated more money to Macmillan’s and Marie Curie than any other organisation and in 2015 alone gave away £2,700,000 to all of its beneficiaries. An incredible 80p in every pound received from visitors to our gardens goes directly to the charities we support. There are over 3,300 gardens that open in England and Wales, either individually or in a group such as Tysoe. The NGS is run almost entirely by volunteers who give up their time and hard work, either in the garden or administratively, for the pleasure of letting other people enjoy their gardens and raise money for those charities so desperately needing our help.

Please come and support us on these two NGS Festival days. Entry £5 per person, children under 16 free. There will be delicious homemade teas and plants for sale in the village hall.

Garden Club

On Thursday 21stApril some forty members, visitors and guests were given an architectural, rather than floral, guide through some of the most notable‘Historic Gardens of Warwickshire’by Diane James, co-author of the book of the same name (ISBN 9781908326010).

Diane, who professes to be a perpetual student, has visited, researched, and written about an amazing number of our County’s great houses albeit these, in their day, were often country retreats for the well-to-do who spent most of their time in London.

Drawings and paintings of properties and plans of estates, some landscaped by ‘Capability’ Brown, were matched to more recent photographs of buildings still extant and the vistas that they now command. Some once notable edifices have been raised to the ground and replaced by more modern habitations but their gardens and associated features survive to this day.

Diane told us of a memorable visit to Virginia where she was able to see a grand mansion comprising major elements of three different English ‘houses’ from the Stratford area -transshipped to America stone by numbered stone, married into a composite whole but retaining the original architectural features of each.

So many chapters of English history have been made in rural Warwickshire and, for a small area, we certainly have far more than our quota of fascinating historic houses and celebrated gardens. Diane brought many of the best of these to our attention and more than convinced us that we should sally forth this Summer and experience what they have to offer.

The above meeting was the last speaker event in our 2015/16 programme. We have our popular annual plant sale at 7pm on Thursday 19thMay and, related or not, hope that villagers will consider having a red, white and blue floral display in their front gardens as part of the Queen’s Birthday celebrations planned for the weekend of the 12thand 13thJune. Please note that when the 2016/17 speaker programme starts in September meetings will be held on the second Thursday of the month rather than the third as has been the case previously. We look forward to welcoming friends old and new.

Minutes of a Oxhill Parish Council Meeting

Tuesday 15thMarch at 8.00pm in the Chapel.

The meeting, chaired by Grenville Moore and was attended by Councillors David Hill, Carol Taylor and Sue Hunt, apologies were received by Stuart Whittiker. One member of the public attended.

Minutes– Minutes of the previous meeting were read, agreed and signed.

Matters arisingFootpath on Main Street- The Parish Council is aware that a number of concerns have been expressed about the footpath in Main Street near to Peacock Cottages and the danger of serious injury. These concerns have been raised with the Highways Department on a number of occasions. We have been assured that these repairs are ‘in the system’. We continue to advise highways of the danger of injury and lobby for early repairs.

Bench– Stratford District Council have been contacted and agreeable to the location of the bench, they have advised that the Highways Department be contacted so that checks can be carried out for cables etc. Following this the bench can be positioned and fixed appropriately.

Queen’s Birthday Celebration– There is a meeting of volunteers next week. Information re-funding will be sent to Sue Hunt so that it can be disseminated at the meeting.

Rural Housing Questionnaire- There was a 36% return of completed surveys the data from these will be collated and the final report issued before Easter. The findings will be discussed at the May Council meeting.

Planning– Applications refused for a new dwelling on the Green lane, the other current application has been review and is pending a decision. Applications have been received for work to the Cherry Tree at Gateways and for alteration and conversion of the redundant carpenters shop to provide residential accommodation.

Finance– Payments were made for the printing of the Oxhill News from October 2015 to March 2016. Also, contributions towards the costs mowing of both the Church Yard and the Village hall Land for the 2015.

Any Other business- Road Markings on the corner of Green Lane and Church Lane- These have been eroded and this appears to be causing confusion for drivers as to the right of way. A letter will be sent to Highways highlighting this.

Neighbourhood Watch– A sum of money has been offered towards this, it has been requested that the Parish Council are the executors of this. In order to do this the Parish Council needs to ensure effective governance processes are in place for the use of these and any other funds. The coordinator will be contacted to ensure that the appropriate protocols are in place in line with the Transparency Policy.

Traffic Awareness– There is a meeting on the 15thApril when the dates for the use of the cameras will be decided. They are available during May, the Police will confirm the dates and agree the positioning.

The Leys Field- An item will be placed in the Oxhill News regarding this matter.

Village engagement in the Parish Council meetings– several ideas were discussed and will considered by Councillors. A small ‘poster’ will be included in the Oxhill News at the beginning of each month when there is a meeting in order to raise the profile of the meeting.

Its free and local and is set up to provide a contact list of members with an ownership or interest in Classic vehicles, who can share information, seek advice or help and generally make possible networking between members or the group as a whole.

Area covered – specifically Oxhill and Tysoe but also to include other outlying villages. Not covering major towns like Stratford or Banbury.

Definition of Classic – anything interesting ! Motorcycles welcome.

No cost, no membership fee, and the main communication to be by email.

The master list which is circulated to all members contains your name , email address, and phone number if you wish. If you are concerned about security, no details of vehicles owned need be included . Members may contact any or all on this list as required.

It is envisaged that there will be a couple of meetings , at a local pub in the summer for all to join in with their cars etc.. Other ideas can be circulated for discussion.

As you know Kineton Surgery, Market Square has introduced a range of new and exciting services for our patients these include a Women’s Health Clinic once a month on a Tuesday Evening. Young Adult Clinic. This clinic we be held weekly from April. Childhood Illness Clinics. We have also recently run a session with Kineton Primary School with the aid of The St Johns Ambulance which was a great success.

Don’t forget were are open every Tuesday evening until 8.30pm where we not only have a late evening surgery but we also have a full Dispensary Service for collection and ordering of medicines.

Travel Clinics. It is getting to the time of year when people will be thinking about booking a summer holiday. If you are going abroad and require injections please ensure that you book these well in advance so that you are assured of the completion of any courses required before your holiday or business trip.

We welcome any feedback on how we can continue to offer a first class service to you our patients and also on any services you feel would benefit the community.

Tysoe Women's Institute

We have been very busy bees, as most of you will be aware! If you would like to join in the fun, come along to our next meeting on 6th April at 7.30. Our speaker will be Nicky Hill on Zoe's Place, infant hospice in Coventry.

Monthly competition, (open to Non members,) a metre of bunting made from any medium.

All our workshops and trips are open to non members, but they are filling up fast and need to be booked in advance.

Up cycling workshop on Wednesday 30th. March at 7.30 in the village hall. Steph Howles will be teaching us the art of up cycling our old bits of furniture.

Members £15 non members £18. Includes decorating materials and refreshments. Just bring item that you wish to up cycle.

Pamper and Prossecco evening on Thursday April 21st. 7-10, pre booking essential. Jennifer and Sharon will be offering mini treatments. Stalls selling skincare, jewellery, accessories etc. price includes Prossecco,and canapés. Members £15 Non members £18. Shopping and refreshments only (no treatments) Members £5 Non members £7.50

Malvern Flower show Friday 6th. May Members £30 Non members £32. Includes mini bus travel and entry to show.

WOT2Grow - Community Orchard

What a roller coaster of weather this last month and the orchard has responded accordingly! The peaches and nectarines have done the in /out flowering along with the apricots as they don't know if it is warm enough to stay out!

At last the pears, plums, damsons, gages and early apples have decided to break out and show us early blossom and super leaves. What a treat at this time of the year.

We are busy weeding and feeding the autumn raspberries and have yet to start on the trees so we can feed them too. The rest of the soft fruit is waiting to be fed so we have lots to do!

The first spraying has been done with garlic extract, seaweed extract and soft soap to help combat fungus and bugs and their eggs.

Everything is looking good and the orchard is a great place to walk, relax and enjoy the beautiful local countryside. Do go along and enjoy!
