Eleanor Rose Ellis

Many of you in the village will know that our family has been deeply saddened by the death of Eleanor (Bella) this summer. From ante-natal classes, through god-parenting, schooling and twelve consecutive joint holidays, her family and ours became intertwined and we loved her like a sister and a daughter.

In June 2010 she was diagnosed with cervical cancer aged only 21 ; she endured surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, but every step of the way it was bad news and in March 2011 she was given 2 months to live. With typical flair she requested a farewell party and a trip to Iceland. The two months (during which she had a colostomy and nephrostomy) came and went, and with dogged determination she actually lived fourteen months one week and one day.

During this time with a never-be-beaten spirit she did all sorts of things and being a popular and social girl her many friends flocked to help distract her, and to help make her shortened life worth living. A whole swathe of young adults have been altered for life almost certainly becoming humbler, kinder, more empathetic and more giving. In her final days she gave many of them a talking-to about aiming high, never giving up and "living every beautiful day" At university Eleanor coxed the medal-winning men's rowing eight and during the weekend of 13-14th October five boys from the rowing squad (including her boyfriend) set out to complete the "3 peaks Challenge" - Ben Nevis, Scarfell Pike and Snowdon - in under 24 hours. This was to raise money for The Shakespeare Hospice and MacMillan Nursing, to remember a very special girl and to keep alive the principle of inspiring others.

The evening before the boys set off, Eleanor's mother Caroline and sister Sophie came to supper and decided that instead of just welcoming them back, they would join the climb to the summit of Snowdon and this they did but inevitably it slowed the boys down and it took a bit longer than 24hours. Caroline came to see me today and described with awe the exhaustion the boys battled, but also the help the experience had been to her. They summited Ben Nevis in a blizzard, Scarfell Pike in the dark and all summited Snowdon in fog, where they lit a candle for Bella.

So if you wish to donate to the Shakespeare Hospice and Macmillan Nursing to acknowledge the efforts of these fine young men, you can do so at:-

http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/veryhighfive

Finally I would like to thank all of you who have enquired kindly about Bella over the last two years.

Deanery News

An Evening for Shipston Deanery:

Tuesday, November 6that 7.15 for 7.30 pm at St. Edmund’s Church, Shipston.

Bishop John, the Bishop of Warwick, will be leading an evening for our Deanery, to which everyone is warmly invited, entitled:

Healing in Three Dimensions:

Worshipping God,
Making New Disciples
Transforming Communities.

This is a quiet, devotional service, during which Bishop John will be offering the ministry of healing and anointing. It promises to be a very special evening, and I would encourage as many of you as possible to join us, and take the opportunity to meet Bishop John.

Treasurers’ Meeting

Also in St. Edmund’s, the following week, we are holding our special meeting for treasurers, and also church wardens and any members of the Deanery Synod who are interested. This gives us a chance to look ahead at the budget for next year, and also to look at some of the more general issues facing treasurers. We shall be meeting at St. Edmund’s Church, Shipston, at 7.30pm on Tuesday, 13thNovember.

A Prayer for Remembrance Sunday:

Grant, O Lord,
for the sake of those whose lives were lost in war,
and for the sake of the generation to come,
that the nations of the world may learn your way of peace;
and that all may have a chance to enjoy the life you have given them,
free from war, tyranny and oppression. Amen.

Guide Dog Puppies

Thank you to everyone who came to meet Lola’s first litter of Guide Dog puppies at our Puppy Open House in aid of Guide Dogs. Thank you also to those who couldn’t come but very kindly sent donations. Your generosity helped us to raise £141.30. Some of this money has already been used to buy some much needed puppy feeding bowls for use at the new Guide Dog Breeding Centre. The puppies left us at the end of September and are now with their puppy walkers. Four of our litter are being sponsored by Andrex to celebrate the Andrex puppy’s 40thbirthday. If you are interested, you can see them on the Andrex Puppy Points website at

www.andrexpuppypoints.co.uk/guidedogs/puppy_list/

Our Andrex puppies are Biscuit, Georgie, Lexie and Leo. Please donate your Andrex Puppy Points to help sponsor them! Some of our puppies have been sponsored in the past, but nothing as high profile as these ones. When they were four weeks old, our house was turned into a photographic studio complete with a Photographer, Creative Director and Producer. It took them 3 hours to shoot 4 puppies, with a supervisor from Guide Dogs, Lucy, Alice and me all acting as puppy wranglers!

This photo took about two seconds to take and shows all nine puppies a couple of days before they left us.

WOT2Grow Community Orchard

We may have complained about the weather this summer but the raspberries at the orchard have loved it!! The soil is fairly free draining so no soggy roots sitting in puddles in clay. This means we have had a bumper crop, far beyond our predictions, and members have been receiving autumn raspberries in quantity. We have also distributed a lot to three care homes in Kineton, to Brailes School and to various elderly and infirm local residents as we said we would do this in our grant application. Members have also taken raspberries to make jam and even raspberry vodka which sounds very interesting!

The usual grass cutting, tidying up, weeding and pruning has also carried on thanks to members and their families.

Our bees are doing well and apparently are very settled, feeding is being done each week but the signs are good so next year we might have honey as well as fruit!

We have ordered and reserved our next batch of trees which we will be planting on Saturday and Sunday Dec 8th and 9th from 10 to 12 and 2 to 4. Our fruit expert, John Edgeley, will be joining us on the 8th at 10:00 to show us how to plant some different trees - watch out for posters advertising the weekend. However from mid November we have 69 holes to dig to put them in! Any help gratefully received.

Check out your orchard atwww.wot2grow.co.uk

Or just come down and see for yourself – we are off the Shenington Road behind the allotments – entrance gates at the far end of the allotments.

If you would like more details please contact one of the following who are co-ordinating the community involvement

Garden Club

The Garden Club and guests had a great day trip to Wells in August and packed in tours of the Bishop’s Palace garden and cathedral. Some of us managed to dodge the very heavy showers and even browsed the market – a great day, with inspiration for gardeners.

The Autumn season of Garden Club talks began with lecturer from Pershore College, Hilary Twigg, explaining the mysteries of taking cuttings. The RHS expert demonstrated every aspect of all types of cuttings with her maxim “It’s never too late”.

With the purse strings being strained it makes sense to take advantage of taking cuttings from our gardens, and from others’. Hilary’s down to earth advice was of practical value and her presentation was very entertaining.

So remember “warm roots, cool heads” make for best conditions to nurture new growth. This sounds like good advice for me too with winter approaching!

Watch this space for the results of the photo competition and great thanks to Grenville Moore for judging it.

Dates for the diary:

November 14th– Orchid Culture with Janet James
December 12th– Christmas Party
January 17th– Making alpine troughs from hypertufa, how to plant and maintain them with Tony Cleary.

New members always welcome.

PLEASE NOTE THE CHANGE OF DATE OF THE NOVEMBER MEETING FOR REASONS BEYOND OUR CONTROL! WE HOPE YOU WILL STILL BE ABLE TO COME.

Broadband Project Update

October 2012

The Coventry Solihull & Warwickshire (CSW) Superfast Broadband Project has been given the go-ahead from BDUK to enter the pre-procurement phase of the project and can now start to engage with suppliers in readiness for a full procurement exercise (see timetable below). This is great news and means that we now enter an exciting time as the project starts to become very real. This is a significant achievement and reflects the amount of hard work that we (and our Community Champions) have been doing over the past few months to really understand the true state of broadband in our area.

Stour Singers - a Christmas bonus

For many years Stour Singers, conducted by founder director Richard Emms, has provided music in Shipston-on-Stour regularly during the Advent season. This year there are two concerts:-

On Saturday 8 December 2012 at 7.30pm in St Edmund’s Church the choir will be joined by the Cherwell Orchestra (leader Judy Springate), Rachel Bird (organ) & a fine quartet of international soloists – Sarah Power, soprano; Shelley Coulter-Smith, mezzo- soprano; Nathan Vale, tenor; and Darren Jeffery, bass-baritone in a performance of Bach’sChristmas Oratorio (Parts 1, 2, & 3.) (Bach wrote this lovely work in six parts to be sung over the first 3 days of the Christmas festival & 3 days of the New Year; its total duration is much longer than modern concert length.)

The second concert , ‘The Great Carol Sing’ for choir & audience with seasonal readings by Anne Hume, is on Friday 14 December 2012 at 7.30pm in Townsend Hall, Sheep St., Shipston-on-Stour, with accompanist, Helen Porter.

Carols through the ages have given solace in difficult times and this is a great opportunity to listen, to take part & to enjoy a social mingling in the interval.

Tickets: for the church concert cost £12.50 , and for the Townsend Hall, £7.00.

(If purchased together, the Townsend Hall ticket will be reduced to £5.00.)

NB Accompanied children admitted free of charge to all Stour Singers events.

Burglar Alert

I recently received the following email from a friend and thought you should be made aware of the latest tricks employed by the criminal fraternity. If you see anything suspicious be a good neighbour and report it to the Police making a note of any details of the people and cars or vans you see around the village. They often park on the edge of the village in order to make a quick getaway, especially during the day. So everyone keep alert.

NHW NW Beware and report chalked symbols on or around your property - Linked to burglaries

Several suspicious incidents have been reported in Warwickshire, over recent days, where home owners have noticed symbols chalked onto the walls of their homes or onto surfaces nearby.

There is evidence that these chalked symbols are used by thieves as a means to identify a property ripe for burglary.

Please see the attached document which details some of the symbols used.

If you spot chalked symbols around your own or other homes please contact Police immediately on 101 and describe the symbols to the operator. If possible please also take a photo of the symbol if you have a camera on your mobile phone.

Thankyou for your vigilance and your help.
